From the opening, drawn-out synth lines on, "E.T ( Extended Technique)" to the echoing bass fueled finish on "Haku" - Denver-based Ramakhandra's debut "S/T" crackles with otherworldly energy.

Recorded and mixed by LA-based engineer Bradley Giroux, who worked on Kamasi Washington’s Heaven & Earth, this record was lovingly crafted by four creative minds pooling their imaginations to create visions of another reality with echoes of our own world. These tracks can be compared to Flying Lotus, Little Dragon, or Hiatus Kaiyote, but that would only tell part of the story. This band exists within a world all its own.

Listening to this record is like voyaging through an undiscovered country filled with creatures from anime, popular culture, and video games. Taken as a whole it feels like the sonic equivalent of a Studio Ghibli film, but you can also get easily lost in their universe by looking at the beauty in every stroke of soundwaves. These songs breathe with life, like on the environmental fable “Kujira,” in which a whale sprouts wings to escape an earth ruined by humanity, or “Andromeda Soup Dumpling,” a dreamland anthem about not losing hope as your loved ones succumb to illness.

Each song digs deep into the internal and external crises facing humanity, but recasts them in magic and hope, remaking sadness and struggle into beauty. Nowhere is this more evident than on the rallying cry of “Haku,” where thunder and lightning crash overhead as singer/harpist Annastezhaa sings a battle mantra of rebirth.

Ramakhandra is music to wrap yourself in, one moment it's raindrops falling on your face, the next it’s an inter-dimensional storm soaking you to your very essence. But above all, it's breathtaking.

Go no farther Until you have seen my face Use these techniques That seem to defy nature Alive in your luminosity Magellanic Cloud cover me I am no longer deceived By that which has been held Against me and I know that I've Felt your shape in the scintillating sky A dragon Cleft the sky, and left glitter behind Melt in the dark of my mind The sadness Of a blossom when it realized The branch could no longer bear its life Can you feel me? Leave not- Until you have seen my face! Alive in your luminosity Magellanic Cloud cover me I am no longer deceived By that which has been held Against me and I know that I've Seen your shape in the sadness of the sky I saw an empty cloud heave An endless roll And arc its weight while it Sobbed cross the desert But I wish it were me A dragon cleft the sky, and left glitter behind Melt in the dark of my mind The sadness of a blossom when it realized The branch could no longer bear its life Can you feel me? (I felt your shape in the…) You found that creature who came from the sun And you taught him that he was not the only one And there was something I could not bear When I saw myself in that cold and molten stare Though he broke your bones, and he bore his teeth, There’s a love that’s still burning, and rising- free You found that creature who came from the sun And you taught him that he was not the only one I saw an empty cloud heave The softest weight Now tell me where you’re from My Andromeda Soup Dumpling Now tell me where you’re from My Andromeda Soup Dumpling And I will follow you there My Andromeda soul- My Andromeda Soup Dumpling Now tell me where you’re from My Andromeda Soup Dumpling

Kujira 04:36
I floated through life, called by the light that I could not find- Till the scythe of the weeping moon cut through the desperate blue And cast my heart into its night I am the massive spirit that moves Over the earth, through ancient loom My rainbow sound is heard for miles My tears are the sea, the sacred water I breathe My bones adorn the depths when I die Float through a desert of nothing To wander away from the ocean’s melancholy But there is a wave of death shifting towards me The reefs wane and bleed Tonight I will dive into the silken, sapphire sky Till my tears become a monsoon My wail will thunder through wool clouds down to human kind How strange it seems, the blood has stopped rushing, even though no pressure has been applied Never mind the sea, even though it comes for me Until you realize you are the sky But I dream of her all the time She beached herself in her pain And died So no one can deny my fate! I will escape the death of this pallid world they’ve destroyed I will shine my light, through a century’s worth of my hunger And they will never know what they have done Now! I fly! My heart is reborn Till I bore the air like a sword, To them it was warned that I would not soar But I do How strange it seemed that the blood has stopped rushing, Away
4.
I saw an empty cloud Heave an endless roll And arc its weight While it sobbed across the water I wish it were me: The one who vanishes silently After there, bunching itself into the corner of the sky Dying to find a freedom Greater than itself But I cannot carry on On my own And I do
5.
There are some spirits behind me now And I can tell they are all on my sound The bear and the whale and the hummingbird My soul is lightning and thunder

Haku 11:13
We left home, drove To the sound wave soaked sandstone Striking from the east, I melted in my slanted seat The mountainside sang lachrymosely While the white molting meadow mirrored The hemming and hawing in me Cried to find the courage in me While it rained in my heart, the clouds hung low Rolling brush beyond the red rocks groaned Saying, “You are no longer asleep! No rest until the rest are free” Convicted by what is now known Centered, alive, our hearts overflow Now all they can see Is the sound of our fire Ripping and sawing Through a dream Inward to the golden sun And you become the rarest love In your position Do you remember us? Let go, let go! Like water, a formless one Blessed from seeing unicorns, and our fire! We haven’t given up on our fight We surface with the strength of I and I We know someone has been lying And now we’re looking for the signs We are the fire and the flame, We are the water and the wave that breaks - Forevermore And though we die, We’ll always rise with terrifying force Now we prepare to fight a war we’ve already won We know who we are It was over before it ever begun And we never fear death Because we go on and on and on We feel it in this endless moment Inward to the golden sun Now, our fire has gone Like water a formless one Our presence is unknown So let go, let go! And soon they’ll feel the fire Now let’s get going to fight Now we’re looking for the signs We are the fire and the flame, We are the water and the wave that breaks - Forevermore And though we die, We’ll always rise with terrifying force Now we prepare to fight a war we’ve already won We know who we are It was over before it ever begun And we never fear death Because we go on and on and on We feel it in this endless moment So catch a soul fire Watch us on fire! Watch us all catch a soul fire
